2d Bomb Wing change of command
BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Col. Steven Basham (right), passes the 2d Bomb Wing guidon to Maj. Gen. Floyd Carpenter, Eighth Air Force commander, to signify his relinquishment of command during the wing change-of-command ceremony July 19. The passing of command is one deeply rooted in military tradition, dating back to the Norman Conquest of England. It serves as a visible means of handing the reins of command to the new commander. As the unit flag or guidon is exchanged, it represents the responsibility associated with the unit being surrendered and accepted. Colonel Basham relinquished command to Colonel Timothy Fay.
