Warren's defenders 'going back to basics' in preparation for Global Strike Challenge

Warren's security forces team for Global Strike Challenge is going back to basics as they prepare for their portion of the competition, which will be held at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., in early November.

"Our goal is to practice perfectly, which will help us reach perfection," said Tech. Sgt. Derrick Grant, 90th Task Response Force team lead. "We're taking the lessons last year's team learned, and using them to improve our training for this year."

One of the main goals this team has is to focus on the core defender basics of the competition and train to perfect those aspects as a team.

"The bread and butter of our day-to-day mission is fitness and shooting," Grant said. "Because of that, we're dedicating time every day to exercising, firing and reading up on our job. Doing that and concentrating on the fundamentals will help us bring home some hardware."

Global Strike Challenge is the second competition Warren's defenders will compete in this year. The first competition was Crow Creek Challenge, which was held in September.

Crow Creek [Challenge] is very similar to Global Strike Challenge, said Senior Airman Patrick Currie, 90th Missile Security Forces Squadron and Global Strike Challenge competitor. Both competitions test the mental and physical aspects defenders see day in and day out.

While not every member of the Global Strike Challenge team competed during the Crow Creek Challenge, every member of the team volunteered to represent Warren.

"The motivation of this team is off the charts," Grant said. "Each and every member of this team is ready to compete. This doesn't mean we're going to rest on our laurels and take it easy.

"In fact, it means the exact opposite," Grant added. "We're going to continue to practice perfectly, just as we've been doing. It's like my high school Reserves Officer Training Corps instructor told me 'practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.'"
