The command chief of Air Force Global Strike Command visited here last week to meet with Airmen throughout the 90th Missile Wing.

During an all-call April 13 for enlisted Mighty Ninety Airmen, Chief Master Sgt. Calvin Williams, AFGSC command chief, spoke about promotions and professionalism.

“Studying is the key to promotion,” he said. “If you study — guess what — chances are you’re going to be promoted. Maybe not the first time, but within the second or third time, you’ll get promoted.”

He also mentioned the effects of the new enlisted performance rating system on promotion rates. The system places greater emphasis on job performance than time in service and grade, he said.

“I missed staff sergeant the first time by one point,” Williams said. “Why? Because I had to overcome time in service and time in grade. I missed tech. sergeant twice. Same deal.”

Today’s enlisted Airmen will see less of that affecting their promotions, he said, and a larger number of them can expect to make chief master sergeant at the 14-year point in their career.

Williams thanked the Airmen and their dependents, who he said face challenges alongside their enlisted family members.

“Every time you move, they have to start all over again,” he said. “We have dedicated friends as soon as we walk into our work centers. They don’t always have that. Go ahead and thank your loved ones for what they do — their sacrifice that they give on behalf of you, and in turn give on behalf of our nation.”

Williams made several stops during his visit here, including the Security Forces Group, a meeting with the base first sergeants and a breakfast with an Airman Leadership School class.

He also traveled to Wyoming National Guard Camp Guernsey for the first time to visit the 620th Ground Combat Training Squadron Airmen who provide missile field-specific training to intercontinental ballistic missile wing defenders.
