USSTRATCOM commander visits Montana-based strategic deterrent force

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. --  Given the important and foundational national security capability that our nuclear deterrence forces provide, U.S. Navy Adm. Cecil D. Haney, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) commander, visited Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, Jan. 13 - 14, 2016.

While here, Haney had breakfast with Airmen and leaders; toured the security forces, missile maintenance and other facilities; and conducted a base-wide all call to discuss USSTRATCOM's mission areas and priorities and Malmstrom's vital role in deterrence and assurance.

During the visit, Haney also thanked the men and women at Malmstrom for their efforts in providing the nation with a safe, secure, effective and ready nuclear deterrent.

"Twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week - and this year, 366 days - your work deters strategic attack against the U.S. and provides assurance to our allies, which is my number one priority," said Haney. "I could not be more impressed by your dedication, your professionalism and your outstanding service to the nation."

As USSTRATCOM commander, Haney is responsible for the global command and control of U.S. strategic forces to meet decisive national security objectives, including the joint military force capabilities that make up the nation's nuclear deterrent force.

Air Force Global Strike Command, charged by USSTRATCOM and the Unified Command Plan, oversees the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) operations of 20th Air Force and the strategic bomber capabilities of 8th Air Force, which are also designated as USSTRATCOM's Task Force 214 and 204, respectively.

Malmstrom is one of three bases committed to 20th Air Force's critical mission.

The level of professionalism presented in the career fields of nuclear operations and nuclear support ensure that the United States remains fully capable to provide comprehensive  warfighting solutions to the commander in chief and secretary of defense.
                                              
"I am truly grateful for the opportunity to meet and interact with so many motivated service members and civilians here at Malmstrom who carry out our nation's strategic deterrence every day," Haney said. "I am confident the assets and mission here are in great hands."

One of nine DoD unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global strategic missions, assigned through the Unified Command Plan, which include strategic deterrence; space operations; cyberspace operations; joint electronic warfare; global strike; missile defense; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; combating weapons of mass destruction; and analysis and targeting.
