Air Force officials announced the results of an up armored High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) accident investigation today.

The investigation looked into facts surrounding a Nov. 29, 2012 mishap in which four Airmen were injured when their HMMWV left the road and rolled over several times.

The Airmen, all assigned to a 741st Missile Security Forces Squadron mobile fire team, were en route from Malmstrom AFB, Mont. to a missile alert facility to perform security duties. Driving down the road at 55 MPH, the HMMWV driver saw deer approximately 40 to 50 yards ahead to the left of the road and walking toward the road. The driver steered to avoid the deer and in doing so overcorrected resulting in the vehicle rolling clockwise between two to five times along the embankment.

During the first roll, the left rear passenger fell out of the vehicle through the left rear passenger door and landed behind the vehicle. His injuries resulted in paralysis.

The remaining passengers of the rolled vehicle suffered lesser injuries.

According to the report, all passengers were wearing seatbelts prior to departing the base.
