Team Barksdale remembers 9/11, recognizes two of their own

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. --  Team Barksdale gathered around the 2nd Bomb Wing Headquarters to pay their respect to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 and to also honor two Airmen who almost sacrificed it all in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

It has been 13 years since the attacks on 9/11, where 2,977 people lost their lives. Two hijacked commercial airliners flew into the World Trade Center towers, another aircraft flew into the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

"Today, we pause for a moment to remember a day that changed our lives forever," said Col. Kristin Goodwin, 2nd BW commander. "We are here not only to pay honor to the lives lost, but to remember the remarkable courage displayed by so many."

During the ceremony, Goodwin presented the Purple Heart and Combat Action Medal to Senior Airman TJ Brantley, and the Bronze Star to Tech. Sgt. Joshua Flood, 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordinance Disposal technicians.

Flood was recognized for guiding a three member team to the safe and successful resolution of 34 combat missions while deployed in support of OEF, among other achievements.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, Brantley received wounds from an improvised explosive device that detonated within 10 feet during a sustained firefight and was awarded the Purple Heart.

"These Airmen embody sacrifice, courage, excellence and honor," Goodwin said. "As we honor them and depart today, I want each and every one of you to remember the solemn day and to know your sacrifice directly opposes the evils of the world and makes America stronger."

Like the Airmen who were recognized today, the resilience and dedication from all military members has contributed to preserving Americans freedom.
