Air Force Global Strike Command commander Gen. Robin Rand and his wife Kim, along with incoming AFGSC command chief Chief Master Sgt. Calvin Williams, visited here Sept. 22 to 24, to meet with Airmen and get a firsthand look at ICBM operations.

Rand talked with Airmen and leaders from 20th Air Force and the 90th Missile Wing, and toured the base and an ICBM missile alert facility to increase his understanding of the mission and its culture.

Although the Global Strike commander gets daily updates on the units throughout his command, the ability to see a base and how the people operate is essential to Rand.

While visiting the Air Force's oldest continuously-operated installation, the general emphasized to the Airmen that he wanted to hear what they had to say and how they felt about the wing's mission.

Rand detailed his expectations to immediate supervisors about how he wants them to lead their Airmen on both formal and informal levels. He also took the opportunity to host two Airmen's Calls, where he emphasized that the daily interactions between leaders of all levels, and the people they lead, is where character is developed and reinforced in the Air Force.

During a tour in the missile field, he praised the Airmen who perform the non-stop alert mission.  "What I've seen in my short amount of time in the [launch control centers] is that the 24-hour shift is all about leadership." Rand said. "The mentorship I've seen between the missile combat crews and the topside security forces and maintenance personnel is fantastic."

In addition to meeting with operations, maintenance and support personnel, Rand and his wife met with victim advocates from the wing's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program, thanking them for the service they provide their fellow Airmen.  Victim advocates provide support and assistance to sexual assault victims to ensure they get the help they need.

Rand told the victim advocates that he could not be more proud of the service they provide and that they embodied what it means to be a wingman.

Throughout his visit, the Global Strike commander emphasized the Air Force wingman concept and stressed that Airmen of all ranks must continue to strengthen the Air Force's core values of integrity, service and excellence.

Before departing, Rand thanked the Airmen for their time, and said he looks forward to coming back to the base to visit more members of the Mighty Ninety.
