Memorial Day Message Published May 21, 2009 By Maj Gen Jim Kowalski AFGSC(P) Commander BOLLING AFB, Washington -- "When you go home, tell them of us and say, for their tomorrow, we gave our today." - The Kohima Epitaph (John Maxwell Edmonds) Since the Revolutionary War more than 1.2 million American men and women have lost their lives in service to our country. Through their unselfish action, we have been given the opportunity to serve our great nation and protect its ideals. American military members have defended freedom around the world. They traded their chance to be husbands and fathers, wives and mothers for their country, and for us. Their actions should not be forgotten. It is equally important we remember the families of our fallen brothers and sisters-in-arms. We are grateful to the families of those who gave their lives so that we may live free. Memorial Day is a time of remembrance; it is also a time for those of us in uniform to reflect on our own commitment. In doing this, we honor the memory of those who came before us and reaffirm our dedication to carry the flag of freedom in the world's greatest military. Enjoy this long weekend and this Memorial Day, I'd ask that you take a moment to honor and remember the valiant service of the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.
