The 509th Bomb Wing Command Post was recently named Best Large CP in the Air Force, after being selected as Air Combat Command's Command Post of the Year.

"The Airmen in the command post have done an outstanding job of carrying on the Whiteman tradition of excellence," said Brig. Gen. Robert Wheeler, 509th BW commander. "The mission of the 509th is of national importance, and the command post is one of the driving forces behind our success."

The award was the result of outstanding scores from multiple readiness inspections, awards won by individual controllers, as well as professional development and volunteer service, according to Senior Master Sgt. Ronald Albers, 509th BW superintendent of the command and control division.

"All of the bases submit packages at the end of the year and compete at the MAJCOM-level," Sergeant Albers said. "The winners go on to compete Air Force-wide. We scored perfect on the last Nuclear Control Order Procedures Testing, which was a first for [U.S. Strategic Command.]"

The command post is one of the most vital systems on an Air Force base, as all critical information is distributed through it.

"We are the eyes and ears for the installation commander," said Master Sgt. Shane Grosso, NCO in charge of command and control operations. "To be an effective controller, one must be able to handle the stress of many things going on simultaneously, and the ability to prioritize the tasks at hand and deal with them appropriately."
