Staff Sgt. Andrew Friend was recognized May 26 for his on- and off-duty accomplishments when he became the first recipient of the Chief's Choice Award.

The monthly award, selected by the Whiteman Chief's Group, recognizes E-5's and below who exemplify service before self, and dedication to the mission, fellow Airmen and their families.

"We wanted to recognize these Airmen for the outstanding job they are doing for the 509th Bomb Wing," said Chief Master Sgt. Steven Gardner, Whiteman Chief's Group president.

Sergeant Friend a 509th Maintenance Squadron B-2 metals technology craftsman was proud to receive the award.

"It was an honor and a privilege to be the first one to get the award," said Sergeant Friend. "It's nice to know that your work is being noticed outside of your squadron. It shows that if you work hard, it pays off."

The sergeant was selected for the award for a number of reasons, to include, his work in fabricating and welding nozzle bay fire suppression system components, which is crucial to B-2 emergency response teams, according to the award citation. Additionally, he was handpicked by the 509th Maintenance Group commander to work directly with Northrop Grumman and depot engineers on determining the cause of a B-2 windscreen malfunction. He also helped improve the B-2 windscreen replacement process by designing and fabricating a measuring tool, which helps save $250,000 in depot costs.

Among other things, Sergeant Friend was also recognized for his participation in extracurricular activities to include: being a squadron sports representative and coach, and a Warrensburg, Mo., volleyball team member.

In addition to a certificate of recognition, award winners also receive a $25 gift card, food court meals and movie passes, courtesy of the Whiteman Base Exchange.
