341st Missile Wing awarded third-consecutive Omaha Trophy

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. --  Strategic Command's deputy commander traveled to Malmstrom Aug. 3 to present the 341st Missile Wing with its third-consecutive U.S. Strategic Command Consultation Committee Omaha Trophy, which is given to the missile wing demonstrating the highest standards of performance.

Vice Adm. Carl Mauney, along with Mr. John Whisler, Jr., representing the Strategic Command Consultation Committee and Maj. Gen. C. Donald Alston, 20th Air Force commander presented the trophy to Malmstrom Airmen and members of the local community inside the base auditorium.

"The fact that you're earning this award for the third time in a row is only more significant because it reflects a culture here, which is very difficult to establish," said Admiral Mauney. "It's a culture of self-inspection, a questioning attitude, forceful back-up and teamwork. Those are the things that make you successful."

"The standards here are excruciatingly high and Airmen at this wing have demonstrated those standards," he said. "You worked hard last year, and my challenge is for you is to keep that record."

The selection for the Omaha Trophy is based on meritorious achievements, safety, community involvement and humanitarian actions, according to STRATCOM officials.
"What you see before you--this beautiful trophy-- is a reflection of the incredible work, dedication and professionalism that you demonstrate every day," said Colonel Anthony Cotton, 341st Missile Wing commander.

The 341st Missile Wing's accomplishments include traveling more than 9 million miles through the missile complex; completing 162 incident-free convoys; flawlessly executing more than 1,300 retargeting actions; revitalizing weapons system storage areas to ensure successful operations; and accelerating the completion of the Propulsion System Rocket Engine Life Extension program by 105 percent.

"To perform to this level over a sustained period of time across so many different obstacles is quite a statement that you're making loud and clear: It is a statement about deterrence, commitment and persistence," said General Alston.

The general acknowledged that the 341st Missile Wing is in "a very unforgiving business."

"The stakes ...are of a global nature, the consequences of your actions can be read around the world," he said. "I know what it takes for mission success here, and you guys are on a roll doing a very important job in a very critical time in our country's history."
