Civil servants are honored throughout the year for their distinguished careers, and each time individuals hit a milestone, they are recognized by their leadership.

Recently, 11 civilians were acknowledged for their service by the 90th Missile Wing commander, and they joined the ranks of the 18 other Warren employees who have served more than three decades.

"The tremendous contribution our civilians give to this wing and the Department of Defense is invaluable," said Col. Greg Tims, 90th MW commander. "We would be lost without the knowledge and dedication they possess, and I am thankful to have had a career surrounded by those who instill toughness and character in and out of uniform throughout not only years, but decades."

By definition, a civil servant is a person in the public sector employed for a government department or agency. Like the military, civilian employees can move throughout the country and overseas as well during their career. However, some may spend their whole career or the majority in one location. There are a dozen civilians who have served solely at Air Force Global Strike Command's F. E. Warren Air Force Base for more than 30 years. When asked why they stay, the main answer is the people.

"I worked at the 90th Medical Group for 29 years, and I loved my job," said Patsy Tate, 90th Logistics Readiness Squadron. "My favorite memory is my 'babies' who I did ultrasounds on the mothers when they were pregnant, and now I run into them and they are teenagers and adults.

I have worked at the 90th LRS warehouse for nine months; it is a totally different type of job, but I still love it."

The civilian at Warren with the most civil service time is Larry Sprague, 90th Missile Wing Museum. He has more than 40 years of service, and has worked here since September 1975.

"My favorite memories about working at Warren have been interacting with the people who seek information or visit the museum," said Mr. Sprague. "I have met commanders from several major commands, others from the Pentagon, and have been in contact with General Chuck Yeager; you never know who you will talk to or who will walk through the door or call next, which is a very interesting aspect of this position that I enjoy the most."
At Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., there are 672 civil servants currently serving on base.
