BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Strikers should review and update their virtual Record of Emergency Data information annually, before deploying, and each time they experience a major life change, such as marriage or divorce, permanent change of station or birth of a child.
The vRED can be accessed through myPers at https://mypers.af.mil/ or via the virtual Military Personnel Flight on the Air Force Portal. On the myPers home page, Airmen should click the “Update my virtual Record of Emergency Data” link and follow the instructions. On vMPF, select “Record of Emergency Data” at the bottom left of the screen. The form takes approximately 15 minutes to fill out and requires addresses and phone numbers for emergency contacts.
“The importance of airmen reviewing and updating vREDs cannot be stressed enough. Updating your vRED now, will take care of your family later” said Jeffrey Pellum, Casualty Assistance Representative and Survivor Benefits coordinator for Barksdale Air Force Base. “After updating the vRED, take a minute to review and recertify SGLI beneficiary information through the SGLI Online System (SOES) as well.”
Accurate information is vital and used to designate beneficiaries for certain benefits in the event of the service member's death, as well as to expedite the notification process in the event of an emergency or the death of the member. Dated or erroneous information inhibits the ability of timely casualty reporting and notification, as well as compassionate follow-on assistance to surviving family members.
For those who do not have access to a vMPF account, such as new accessions or trainees, a completed DD Form 93 must be completed until they establish an online account.
Every Airman should review the RED during the initial enlistment or employment review, upon reporting to a new duty station, when ordered to periods of temporary duty in excess of 30 days, prior to all deployments, regardless of length, prior to departure on permanent change of station orders.
For more information, visit myPers, select “Any” from the dropdown menu and enter “vRED” in the search menu. Members can also contact the casualty assistance representative on base.
