A gathering of friends, family and Mighty Eighth Airmen made way as the guest of honor slowly approached the front of the stage. Raymond Odom, a 93-year-old World War II veteran, sat patiently in a large chair on stage as he waited for the unveiling of a memento he lost while serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces in England more than 70 years ago.

Today’s 8th Air Force activated under the designation of VIII Bomber Command at Langley Field, Virginia, as part of an expansion of the U.S. Army Air Corps Feb. 1, 1942. The 8th Air Force, headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., celebrated its 75th anniversary with retired 8th Air Force commanders and command chiefs, and several Air Force Global Strike leaders and Royal Air Force personnel. The Eighth commands the U.S. Air Forces entire fleet of long-range, stealth, and heavy bombers, to include the recently added E4-B National Airborne Operations Center fleet. On Feb. 1, 1942, the history of today’s 8th Air Force began to write its story. With milestones such as the Doolittle Raid and Operation Linebacker II, it’s no surprise that the 8th Air Force made a lasting legacy and is known today as the “Mighty Eighth.”

Yancy Mailes, Command Historian, and Shawn Bohannon, Command Archivist, show off a chest containing “bomb com” cups awarded to various Strategic Air Command wings for their annual competition. Several of the cups are displayed in front of the chest. The new Global Strike Research Facility will house these artifacts as well as command archives for both SAC and AFGSC. Air Force Global Strike’s Office of the Command Historian held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Global Strike Research Facility, May 18, at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. The new facility improves archival storage, research capabilities and other forms of support the history office provides to the command.

The 596th Bomb Squadron paved the way for American forces to defeat Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, whose troops had invaded neighboring Kuwait. Members of the 596th participated in Operation Senior Surprise, known as “Secret Squirrel” to the operators who would fly the mission. The bombers traveled more than 14,000 nautical miles non-stop and was the longest combat mission in history at the time. Desert Storm: 2nd Bomb Wing leads the air war
In the early morning of January 16, 1991, the 2nd Bomb Wing deployed seven B-52G Stratofortresses crews to Iraq in a single, secret mission that would mark the beginning of Operation Desert Storm.
