The fiery sword at the center of the Nomad Memorial burned bright through the foggy morning Feb. 18, 2011, at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The memorial was constructed to honor the hundreds of wounded personnel and 19 Airmen who lost their lives during the Khobar Towers bombing. June 25 will mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy. On June 25, 1996, a tanker truck filled with explosives erupted at the Khobar Towers housing complex in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Nineteen Airmen were killed and 500 were wounded in the attack. Of those who were killed, 12 were members of the 33rd Fighter Wing based out of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The personnel supported Operation Southern Watch. Strategic Air Command’s standard lies folded in the new Global Strike Research Facility, which is the new home of Air Force Global Strike Command’s Office of the Command Historian. The dates 1946-1992 mark the activation and deactivation dates of this command.
