Senate confirms new AFGSC commander

Maj. Gen. Stephen Wilson has received U.S. Senate confirmation for appointment to the grade of lieutenant general and assignment as Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command.

Wilson currently serves as the commander of Eighth Air Force, here, and as U.S. Strategic Command's Joint Functional Component Commander for Global Strike at Offutt AFB, Neb. Additionally, he commands Task Force 204 which oversees the Air Force nuclear bomber and reconnaissance activities in support of USSTRATCOM.

"Global Strike Command has the tremendous responsibility to develop and provide combat-ready forces for nuclear deterrence and global strike operations in support of the President and combatant commanders," Wilson said. "I am honored for the opportunity to lead the men and women who perform this critical mission."

Wilson received his commission from Texas A&M University in 1981. He is a decorated pilot with more than 4,500 flying hours and 680 combat hours. He has been assigned to numerous operational, command and staff positions during his career and has commanded at the squadron, group and wing level.

Lt. Gen. James Kowalski, the current commander of AFGSC, has been nominated to be the next deputy commander of USSTRATCOM.
