Recruiters share Air Force story at Wings Over Whiteman

Recruiters representing Airmen, Soldiers and Sailors came to this Air Force Global Strike Command base from surrounding communities, such as Blue Springs and Sedalia, to share military information with the public at the 2010 Wings Over Whiteman Air Show and Open House, Sept. 18 and 19.

"The Air Force is all about advancement. We have Airmen retiring every day, so we need qualified recruits to fill their spots to remain the most powerful Air Force in the World," said Staff Sgt. Cody Newson, recruiter from Kansas City, Mo.

In support of recruiting for the air show, came the B-2 bike, A-10 monster truck, U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron Thunderbirds and Air Force Raptor. The B-2 Stealth Bike, or "The Spirit of Innovation," mimics the characteristics of the aircraft, and was made by Orange County Chopper in support of the B-2's 20th anniversary in 2009. The A-10 monster truck shares attributes with the aircraft, to include the 30mm Gatling gun. The Raptor is the recruiter's suburban loaded with a sound system and flat screen televisions.

Finally, the main attraction was the Air Force Demonstration Squadron Thunderbirds, who support Air Force recruiting by demonstrating the precision, pride and professionalism of all Airmen.

"The props create a concentration and focal point for people to gather. It acts as an ice breaker for those that are shy. They can come up ask questions about the Air Force and what it has to offer them," Sergeant Newson said.

"Recruiting is important, but we were also there to answer questions and help the public in any way possible," Sergeant Newson said.

Information tents were spread around the ground show and provided an assortment of hand outs. The pamphlets included information on tuition assistance, the GI Bill, special forces and career paths.

"We aren't there to necessarily recruit that day," said Tech. Sgt. Patrick Cone, Sedalia recruiter. "We are there to create awareness in the community and instill public respect for the Air Force."
