In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is officially celebrated Sept. 15-Oct. 15, the base Diversity Council hosted two cultural events on Ellsworth Air Force Base.

“We have a lot of Hispanic people here on base,” said Senior Airman Kashe Smith, a 28th Medical Group public health technician and Diversity Council member. “We use this month to let them know they are valued members of the Air Force and we want them to be proud of their heritage.”

Airmen volunteered for a book reading at the base’s Child Development Center on Sept. 19, where they read about colors in English and Spanish and made festive flowers out of tissue paper. This was later followed by a Hispanic Heritage Month trivia night at the Dakota’s Club on Oct. 12, where participants answered questions about Hispanic history, countries, language, and holidays.

“We did the trivia night because it seemed to be a good way to teach people about Hispanic culture,” Smith said. “We had fun and I hope we can do it next year.”
