The 2nd Bomb Wing hosted a Munitions Maintenance Competition on the flight line here Oct. 3 as part of this year's Global Strike Challenge.

Airmen from the 2nd Munitions Squadron and the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron spent two months training for the competition, which consisted of three parts. Two Airmen completed the pre-flight, four Airmen loaded missiles, and 11 Airmen participated in the munitions build piece.

"The competition is extremely important," said Capt. Brian Sporysz, 2 MUNS operations officer. "It builds camaraderie among the individuals who are loading and building, and it helps prepare them for Barksdale's war-fighting efforts."

The Airmen on the bomb-building team were all new to this year's Global Strike Challenge, said Staff Sgt. Daniel Hodges, 2 MUNS line delivery crew chief.

Hodges was one of the competitors during the munitions part of the challenge and helped his team assemble and chain up 42 500-pound bombs in 21 minutes, 17 seconds.

"This was the fastest we've ever done it," Hodges said. "Our practice has paid off by giving us the confidence to produce bombs quickly and efficiently."

The team's quick skills will help during scoring as speed and accuracy are the judges' main concerns in this competition. Final scores will be posted at the Air Force Global Strike Symposium in November.

Global Strike Challenge is the world's premier bomber, Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and security forces competition with units from Air Force Global Strike Command, Air Combat Command, Air Force Reserve Command and the Air National Guard.
